Nr. 1 Summary:

The shortstory High Ground published in 1982 written by John McGahern is about a young man called moran who get an offer as a principal of school.
At the beginning of the story moran thinks about the last night with his girlfriend. Than Senator Regan, who often buys farms but never works, offers him to get principal of the school. His own old techer Master Leddy is the actually headmaster of this school and Regan wants that moran displaces Leddy.
Three days before moran visited his exteacher. He feasted moran very well an went then with him to a pub. At the way Leddy had to make a few breaks because of his great age. However Leddy gave Moran some advices for his future life.
Back in the present Muron trys to avoid the Senator and goes home. Because of having no water Moran goes to the well. At the way he hears voices from the pub. Leddy converse with some exstudents about the high intelligent of the village.It's because of the High Ground Leddy declairs.

-Senator Regan: ’ in love with himself, arrogant, unsympathetic, married with a young girl (father is the richest man in the region)

Reegan:
- speaks aggressively and impatiently; he gives orders and speaks in imperatives --> he is the boss
- doesn't care about non-practical matters, dismisses gratitude, talking about marrying he does not care about the girl herself, only about who her father is
- states his opinions directly; is sharp when talking
- his language and conversation suggest the aggression and impatience of modernization process
Leddy:
- talks affectionately, gently and slowly
- often talks about the past --> stands for a world that looks backwards into the past
- shows a fatherly attitude towards Moran
- his conversation represents the slightly "inefficient", patient, relaxes, outdated "old world" of rural life

wir mussten erklären, wofür der Titel "High Ground" stehen könnte.
Vielleicht hilft es ein paar Leuten ja ein wenig weiter..
allerdings habe ich den Aspekt der Moralität nicht berücksichtigt!! Ansonsten wurde mein Text auch von unserer Lehrerin korrigiert.

The title 'High Ground' could stand for the high intelligent of the people in the village. At the end of the story Master Leddy talks with some people about the intelligent and the chances the people of the village could have taken. But on page 22 on line 35 we get to know that the people with the brains mostly stayed there, because they had to. They did not go to the cities and passed their brains on to the next generation.
The title 'High Ground' shows us how difficult it is to decide if to leave the village or not. The people know that their families need their support. They have to make a big/high decision.
They renounce their chance of getting a good job in a city.
