______________________
- humorous, sarcastic, mocking, ironic
- critical
Drinkwater:
- Reached the menopause and is now doing unimportand work in the 'Remidial Law' (P. 37, ll. 11 -> "he had been kicked down every Departmental stairs")
Thackerberry:
- Stuttering
- Thrown out of the house by his wife
-> In bad health condition (P.37, ll. 20 -> "five years of litigation had reduced him to skin and bone")
Mulfahy:
- He is very fat and fairly addicted to fast food (p.37, ll. 29 -> "Oriental takeaways")
-> In bad health condition aswell

1. Describe the mood and atmosphere :
- boring
- depressed
- dissapointed
- hopeless
- pessimistic
- frustrated
- to be in dire straights
- dark --> sinister --> gloomy
- melancholic
- sad
2. Analyse the language of the story
The author uses normal sentences with different languages and difficult vocabulary. He also uses legal vocabulary for different topics: Here the topic is laws and the words like resuscitation and ramification are mentioned. Besides he employs direct speech to characterize the persons in the story e.g. :" H-has anyone h-heard the latest report on the Referendum?" (p.37, l. 17).
Next there are repetition words in the text, which confuses the reader. This part to the text, who confuses is on page 43, l.20-30.
In the reality is the topic of the story sad and depressive. At last the author uses swear words, that creates aditionatly an aggressive atmosphere.
3. Describe the narrators standpoint. Include the title.
The narrator wants to change his life. The people are sad and depressed because they stick to much in their laws and morals that they haven't got a chance to change anything. Older people have no opportunity to get a better life or to emigrate. Thats why he feel like a prisoner. Alcoholism is a big problem, so the author fall in deeper depression.
deep--> worse
Furthermore the author is very depressed. The medicine is alcohol.
The narrator is pro- divorce.
4. Revising the story
author/title: séan mac mathúna: Prisoner of the republic
perspective: third- person- narrator
setting(place/time): Ireland, Dublin, 1980's
characters/major character traits: Bagnall, works in Civil Service in the department of justice
He is disappointed of his work and frustrated. Furthermore he is depressed, sad and hopeless so taht he drinks too much alcohol. He feels like a prisoner of the republic
conflict: They can't escape from their problems and they can't solve them, so they try to drown their problems in alcohol.
He have to translate laws into Gaelic and they can't escape from their marriages.
major topic: depressed people, who are trapped in their marriages
connection with other stories:
- Alcohol --> Master Leddy (High Ground)
- depressed atmosphere
- to be prisoned (like Maura)
- rural Ireland
- religion (occasion of sin)
How is the topic related to the topic "Ireland"?
- sticking to morals /church laws
- alcohol
- religion
- hard to change their life
Hoffe es hilft ein wenig
