At first, the AD has its various manifestations and therefore, there are various ways of achieving the AD. But there is a myth that is basic to the AD, if you work hard, you can achieve your goals and become rich and prosperous.
It is an idealized picture, after all, based on the various values and believs of the American nation.
And sometimes a dream can turn into a nightmare, for a person or even for the whole nation, e.g. Vietnam war - they thought they fight for democracy and freedom, but it turned out to be wrong.

The American Dream is not to be realized by everyone, even if they have the abilities and qualifications. Sometimes the zealous wish of a person to realize the common materialistic AD of success and prosperity can fail, no matter how hard the person tries, therefore, the person would have been better off without trying to achieve his goals.

For instance Willy Loman from the play "Death of a Salesman", he fails in realizing AD. It is simply not made for him.
He dreams of going from rags to riches, not just through hard work, althought he is an hard-working man, but through being "well-liked".

Moreover, the dream of the first settlers, a dream of prosperity through hard work does not really wor nowadays. You have to be something special to make this common idea of the AD come through. Willy for instance is "a dime a dozen". He is nothing special.

And maybe he should have focused more on another dream - a non-materialistic dream. He could have become happy in the end, like his son realizes at his requiem "He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong. (...) He never knew who he was."

Like his son Biff realizes at his requim: "He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong. (...) He never knew who he was."

Whatsoever, not just Amrican citizens fail in realizing the AD, also new immigrangts, especially illegal immigrants from Mexico.
They dream of leading a better life over the border, because the living conditions in Mexico are very bad, poverity, rape, murder, terror and violence are big problems in Mexico. As you cans see in the book "The Tortilla Curtain", America and Candido come to America to find a better life. Therefore, America states she wants a car and a house.

But, when they arrive in America. Nothing is like they have imagined. They have no rights, America gets raped and they have to camp in Topanga canyon and so they have to surrive under even worser conditions. Also, they have to work hard for a nickel and get exploited.

Soon, America realizes that her life in Mexico, maybe would have been better.

Instead of making their dream come through, their lives have turned into nightmares.

So ich hoffe geht einiger maßen, hab ich mir aus dem Finger gezogen eben. Wenn ihr Fehler findet sagt bescheid. Auf jeden ist sowas so ziemlich das einzige was man zu dem Thema wissen muss. Kurz: American Dream then and now, Immigration and Dream and Reality.
