* proud when skin colour& his knowledge is concerned
* might believe in something like God ( a super power / his dead

* doesn't let himself to be humiliated
* refuses to write the letter of excuse because of his dignity

Robert Crawford:
* wrote one unpublished book
* jealous of / envies smarter people
* is prejudiced against blacks
* doesn't believe in Jamal's talent
* proud of his position--> get's angry when challenged
* enjoys bullying his students
* afraid to lose his face because he's not as knowledged as he pretends
* enjoys his power
* unjust (towards Jamal; doesn't want to give him a chance to make up his fault)


Claire Spence:
* rich white girl
* student at Mailor School
* helps Jamal; gives him advice& stands by him
* her father is part of the school board--> very influential
* attracted by Jamal--> in the end they fall in love
* she believes in their love, whereas Jamal is desillusioned
* might be naiv at least to certain degree ( never had to suffer any financial worries)
* rebelling against her father by assisting Jamal--> rational/on purpose/deliberately
* she believes in Jamal as a writer--> impressed by his talent of writing
* no prejudice against blacks
* torn between her father and Jamal ( upper class <--> lower class )

William Forrester:
* calls himself Mr. Johanson
* lost his brother, who was a soldier
* immigrated from Scottland
* very stubbom
* no family left / lonely
* afraid of crowds
* never got over the death of his brother ( was his only friend )--> deep depression ( lives isolated)--> broken man
* within a year his father & mother died also
