Level of education

Jamal
- about to finish high school, prepares for college
- average marks but very intelligent
- hides his intelligence to avoid peer pressure
- very talented writer
- knows a lot literature

Jefferson
- extremly low level of edu. at the beginning of the novel, almost illiterate

Attitude towards education

Jamal
- education-> important, reads a lot
- hides his talents-> escaping peer pressure
- admits wish to develop his writing skills with Forrester's help, takes the opportunity to attend a prestigious prep- school
-values his pride and his loyalty towards forrester higher than his educational perspectives
- refuses to be reduced to the stereotype of physically fit but academically weak black student

Jefferson
- has no attitude towards education; considers himself to be a hog
- is a hostile towards Grant Wiggins when he tries to teach him
- latter realises that education is a way for him to discover his own feelings to cope with the fear of dying
