Hi,
I've added a powerpoint presentation, which I held today.
Despite of the information listed on the forum and the headwords in the PPT
I am going to list a few things, which I did mention in the Presentationa:
1st Book: He became famous as an author
2nd: caused a scandal because of the sexual treatment, and was banned in Ireland [deeper interpreation: who wasn't allowed to teach for a whole year, which can be mentioned as a parallel with Moran later on, as he had tough times too.
3rd: Made use of his life experience
4 and 5 doesn't need further explanation
The Story:
Moran tells about his past and dreams, for example he mentions that he wants to live with his girflfriend in Ireland and dreams about their shared future.
..
Moran was shocked about the offer, he remembered his conversation with his old schoolmaster Leddy three days before and the idea that he is going to displace him.
b/c he didn't like the idea ...
"High Ground" hast two meanings
The first one is that the village is on a high ground, which is a fact.
The second one is figurative moral
In the beginning of the text, where Moran is on the river and the senator on the high coast.
This reflects the social positios, where Senator Reegan is on the higher society and talks down to the young Moran
Explanation about the Timeline: the squares are ordered the way the things are happening within the story, the numbers below just shows in which order the are mentioned by the author.

achja und das mit Reegens kindern stell ich mir so vor...
[...]
zumindest will er den Leddy loswerden. WARUM? weil....

I think you overdid it with the interpretation about Reegan and his three sons.
Just try to imagine you are a father and you have also at least one son, who is going to the local primary school, and you know that the principal is an alcoholic.A catholic man isn't allowed to consume alcohol (not sure about that)
[Most of the schools were catholic one in Ireland, wee this might have been one too, but I don't know how Leddys family fits in there]
And I guess you didn't understand the end of the story, Leddy talks to his old/current students in the exlucsion zone at a pup; meanwhile he describes the high intelligence of the people who are living in "the high ground" (village); This might me the disproval for you speculation.
[This can be another parallel with the author as well, while one of his books was forbidden, he left Ireland (not sure, but he definately went away) for most probably multiple decades.
\\edit proofreading sucks

Indeed, I exaggerated XD You are right, my interpretation about Reegen and his son cannot be proved, as well as the-alcoholic-interpratation. He might really care for his sons, because he does not want Leddy to be Principle (unknown reason). We don't know...
(The school is likely Catholic, cuz Leddy is a priest)
However, regarding to the end... I do not think that I got it wrong...
I account the end of the story as a proof for my speculation.
Scene in the pub:
Students: why do we have so many clever people here, Master Leddy?
Leddy: Because of the High Ground.
My interpretation is just based upon the Moral High Ground. Thus, according to Leddy the reason, for the clever people staying in the rural area, is that they are moral.
Because of the morality they are aware of the consequences of leaving their birth place and their roots, so that they loose tradition and history of their village. Therefore, they stay in the village.
This book also reveals conscience of the author. He regrets that he left the country and did not live a modest life, he is supposed to life according to the moral. This short story is like a moral solemn to the reader. It reflects the situation, in which everyone will be confronted during his life:
Go your own way??? or Be loyal to your homeland??? or both??? or none???
Consequently, nothing would be contradictory to my interpretation. Or isn't it as obvious as I think it is?
Nevertheless,, there are lots of more elements in this story one could analyse, which I did not bring up (i have got hobbies
), e.g. Reegen as a "modernizator", inner conflict of Moran, literally meaning of "High Ground", Reegen on a "higher position" (=High Ground"), black is also white and white is also black (means: there are good and bad humans at first sight, but they also give bad/good examples), etc.
(The school is likely Catholic, cuz Leddy is a priest)

I guess I've just got your point wrong. It is now clear to me and makes sense where you did write it in english. I also had only one aspect of the meaing high ground in the last sentence, sorry for that

Furthermore you've got some pretty nice observations.
I am not going to track this post anymore, because we finished the short story collection book in our class.
