Nr1)
Outline Robertson’s views on the official 2015 German “Youth Word” and the use of mobile technology in different generations – those born before and those born after the year 2000.

The text „Smartphone Zombies Are Taking Over Our Pavements. Am Ithe only person who thinks that’s a good thing? Was written by Douglas Robertson and published in the online magazine “The Independent“ on 21 February 2016.
The text deals with the Chances and risks of globalisation and informs the reader about the impact of smartphones on children and their social behaviour.
Douglas Robertson introduces into the topic by explaining what the German Youth Word of the Year contest which is organised by Langenscheidt is. She adds that the word chosen in the Last year was “smombie“, which stands for “smartphone zombie“ and is gaining relevance in Uk too.
Right after this introduction the author ridicules this term (smombie) and reveals her opinion on such stereotypes. She is of the opinion that such stereotypes are not true, exaggerated and does only damage the potential of new technology.
In the third paragraph the author refers to an article published by The Sunday Times which dealt with the so-called dangers of walking while texting (which means to write a text on the smartphone). The author worries that this stereotypical image of a smombie is actual the attempt to demonise the generation rather than the technology.
Robertson also calls up memories of the circumstances which came up after this word has been coined in Germany. Many People assumed the word was not used by young people but it was used to talk about the young people and to speak ill of them. According to the author it is exactly this what signals her that the whole concept oft he Yout Word of the Year is not correct.
In the next paragraph the author makes fun of the fearings about the upcoming generation. Furthermore she reveals her that exactly these children growing up with social media and advanced technology are more likely to have a healthy relationship with technology than people from older generations.
She continues by comparing the older generation with the new generation and mentions that millennials (people born between 1980 and 2000) often are not used to the new technology and are suffering under the obligation to be capable of using advanced technology while the new generation can benefit from these technologies since it enhance their lives.
Finally the author concludes that the younger generation will not be governed by the new technology but use them in order to benefit from it and the author also mentions his urgent appeal that we must evolve and adapt with the technology since it does also evolve and adapt with the time.

Vor allem bei dem Letzten Satz mit dem Appeal und bei: demonise the generation rather than the technology, bin ich unsicher.

Abends kommt die Analyse und der Rest!

Aufgabe 2: Analyse how Robertson presents his views. Focus on communicative strategies and
use of language.

As the impact of advanced technology on children is an highly controversial issue, the author has to employ certain communicative strategies to win readers over his side and convice them of the positive aspects which go along with the use of technology in young age.
Firstly Robertson uses a certain structure which allows the reader to follow the topic and this line of argumentation easily. She states her opinion and her main thesis right in the heading [oder einfach title?]. She also uses a rhetorical question in order to emphasise that she is rather an outsider with her opinion (title: „Am i the only person wwho thinks thats a good thing?). But this does also reveal her intention to make more people aware of the benefits.
It is also extraordinary that the author uses the special term „smartphone zombies are taking over our pavements“ which is of course an hyperbole to catch the reader’s attention.
In the first section the author refers to the title and explains why she chose the word Smartphone Zombies.
In the second section Robertson uses irony to show how ridiculous the sterotype of the modern „smartphone zombie“ is (e.g. ll.5-6 „people veering blindly along pavements, their eyes glued to their phones...). He continues by creating tension with the phrase „I just dont buy it (l.7). She clarifies that he is of the opinion that the sterotypical view on the new generation (especially these people born after 2000) is wrong.
In the following sections Robertson ridicules the alleged danger of using new technology like smartphones all the time. Furthermore he explains that he assumes that the purpose of the word is to demean the younger generation. He tries to convince the reader of his hypothesis by using a correctio (l.11 „not only a technology but also a generation“).
In addition, the author criticise that the word „smombie“ should not be the Youth Word of the year simply because it is used by teens rarely but more often used by elderly people to talk about the youth. He puts emphasis on this tension between the older and the younger generation by writteng „by“ and „about“ in italics. The same effect is achieved by using quotation marks every time he uses the word „smombie“ (e.g. l. 10).
In the next paragraph (l.16-20) he uses again irony to show that the fears about the negative impact on advanced technology are too exaggerated and contrasts this view with his opinion by adding right after that sentence the (alleged) positive aspects of using technology in younger age. He tries to persuade the reader’s opinion by using the personal pronoun „we“ (l. 24) and „they“ to demonstrate closeness and appeal to the reader’s emotion since most of the readers have children[oder are having??] who are affected by this topic.
In the end [komma?] the author concudes that the people have to adapt and evolve with the technology and uses a chiasm [oder ohne „a“] (in l. 29) to stress this conclusion because he also restates his main thesis and shows the importance of the acceptance and the proper use of technology instead of demeaning it.
(ich könnte noch auf informal style and colloquial language eingehen. Brauche ich ein besseren Schlusssatz?)

Kreative: (comment, da ich nicht genau weiß wie man eine Panel discussion schreibt)
Comment on Robertson’s view on the digital age’s “obligation to be constantly
online” (l. 22). Refer to the article

The author claims that the advanced technology has a negative impact atleast on the older generation because they are not used to it and it logically leads to the obligation to know the function and proper use of such devices.
There are a few aspects which would support this view, but can it really be true that the advanced technology has only bad impacts on the older generation?
It is true that a lot of eldery people are not used to such technologies and therefore they can not use it properly. It is also true that there is an obligation to be capable of using such devices (e.g. in your job or in order to stay in contact with your family).
Maybe the author also assume that this puts pressure on a lot of people.
However i find it hard to believe that there are not positive aspects of the use of these kind of technology for the older generation.
First of all, I think that it does not put pressure on them but encourage them to learn new thing in order to stay connected with newer trends/developments and their younger family members. The new technology enables people around the world who are far away to stay in contact and enjoy a feeling of closeness and togetherness.
The urge to use this technology makes sure that every one benefits from it.
It is also not hard to learn the proper use of these device and younger family members could teach it to someone who is not capable of using it properly. Learning by doing is the key word!
And also if puts some people under pressure in the short run, in the long run it enhances their lives surely!
I disagree with the opinion that older generations can not benefit from new developments and do only suffer under it. I am of the opinion that they can benefit from it aswell.
But i support the author’s main thesis that it is a good thing that such an high amount of younger people are capable of using new devices properly.
Finally I can conclude that I strongly question the assumption that the older generations only suffer under the new technology and am convinced that they can use this enrichment aswell and benefit from it. However it is of high importance that the older generations are getting used to new developments otherwise they will not be able to benefit from it.
